Mary Sanchez is a weekly syndicated columnist with Tribune Media Services and a local columnist with The Kansas City Star, specializing in immigration, education, race, politics and culture. She received the National Clarion Award in 2007 for column writing and her columns appeared in Best Newspaper Writing 2007, published by The Poynter Institute.
Sanchez also writes a monthly column for Poder, a business magazine geared to Latin America and has been a correspondent for EFE, a wire service based in Madrid, Spain. A Kansas City native, Sanchez has lived in Mexico and traveled extensively in Central America.
SYNOPSIS: Tom and his comrades spend the day at play on Jackson’s Island – until homesickness distracts their thoughts. They are soon distracted by the sound of a steamboat firing a canon into the water, from which Tom deduces that the village of St. Petersburg fears that he and his comrades have drowned.
