

Civic leader Edward T. Matheny Jr., who graduated from SouthwestHigh School in 1940, takes a fond look at his alma mater on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
"Every son and every daughter bears thy hallowed name; far above all others, always thou shall bring us fame. Southwest! Southwest!"
So goes the SouthwestHigh School alma mater.
Matheny - author of two books on the history of SouthwestHigh School, The Rise and Fall of Excellence and Once More with Feeling - discusses the school's proud past.
Former Kansas City Star editor Laura Hockaday said of Matheny: "You have given so many people so much pleasure with your books. You have captured people and events for all time. That is a great gift to Southwest and all its distinguished alumni."
