The 1940 Tax Assessment Photograph Collection - a visual record of every structure then standing within Kansas City, Missouri - is being cataloged thanks to a grant awarded to the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Kansas City Public Library.
In 1940 the Works Progress Administration hired workers to conduct a photographic survey of the city. This unique collection of more than 40,000 1" X 1.5" contact sheet images has been digitally scanned by the library's staff.
The grant - supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State - provides for the hiring for one year of a metadata librarian who will catalogue the photographs.
This was one of six competitively awarded digital imaging grants to libraries in Missouri.
Eventually the entire 1940 Tax Assessment Photograph Collection will be available online. In the meantime, the photos can be viewed in to the Missouri Valley Room of the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. Patrons can also obtain low-resolution copies of the photos of specific city blocks by calling 816.701.4500.
