Illness, Death, and Jane Austen

Presented By
Sheryl Craig, Cheryl Kinney

Jane Austen’s enduring appeal may stem from the romanticism and wit of her writing. But there is fascination, too, with the uncertain circumstances of her death July 18, 1817, at the relatively young age of 41.

Approaching its 200th anniversary, two Austen experts look at the novelist’s passing in the English city of Winchester. Dallas  physician Cheryl Kinney focuses on Austen in looking at illness and death in Georgian England. The University of Central Missouri’s Sheryl Craig discusses Georgian funerals and burials, likewise spotlighting Austen and her modest service and interment in Winchester Cathedral.

The event is co-presented by the Jane Austen Society of North America, Metropolitan Kansas City Region. An informal tea precedes the presentation.
