How do I use the library catalog?

The library catalog identifies the books, movies, music, magazines, and newspapers you can find at the library.

Find the library catalog

From the library's website, use the search box at the top of every page to search the catalog.

From the public computers, you can access the library catalog in two ways:

  • On the Catalog-Only computers in the Central Library, click the Catalog icon
  • On all other library computers, click either the Catalog icon or the Kansas City Public Library icon

Find a book

If you know the title:

  1. Type the title of the book into the search box and click the Search button.
  2. Assuming we have the book or similar items, a list of books will appear. Click the title of the item you are interested in.
  3. This page will provide you with the call number, and will tell you where the item is - what branch or library, and more importantly, if you can check it out or not (ie., on the shelf or already checked out). This page also provides you with handy features like a summary of the book and book reviews from various sources.

If you know the author:

  1. Type the author's name into the search box and click the Search button.
  2. Assuming we have materials by that author, click on the author's name in the Author facet on the left side of the screen.
  3. A list of that author's books will appear. Click the title of the item you are interested in.
  4. This page will provide you with the call number, and will tell you where the item is - what branch or library, and more importantly, if you can check it out or not (ie., on the shelf or already checked out). This page also provides you with handy features like a summary of the book and book reviews from various sources.

If you don't know the title:

  1. Type your topic keywords into the search box and click the Search button.
  2. Assuming we have the book or similar items, a list of books will appear. Click the title of the item you are interested in.
  3. This page also provides you with handy features like a summary of the book and book reviews from various sources.

Advanced search

Advanced search works the same way as the basic search, but gives you more options. You can search specific fields (title, author, subject, ISBN/ISSN number, call number, and year) as well as specify format and location.

Remember, when in doubt - ask a librarian for help!
