For reproducible tax forms:

The Central Reference desk on the third floor of the Central Library has federal reproducible tax forms and publications, and Kansas City Earnings reproducible Tax forms. All of the library branches have reproducible city tax forms as well, except for the Ruiz and Plaza Branches.

Free Online Tax Preparation and Filing

As more and more people are opting to use online tax preparation and electronic filing for individual income taxes, the federal government has made it easier than ever to link taxpayers to companies who will provide this as a free service to those who meet certain income guidelines.

Internal Revenue Service

The IRS website, has a whole section devoted to what they call Free File. There are links to 20 companies that offer this free service. Be sure to read the Before Getting Started section and the Step by Step Instructions section for tips on choosing a company and gathering the necessary documents for filling out the forms. Be especially sure to always go through the IRS website to link up to a company to take advantage of this free service.

KC CASH

KC CASH is a coalition of local businesses and community organizations that support working families in building financial stability. Free income tax preparation is available to taxpayers with income less than $49,000. For additional information about tax preparation days and hours, please call the United Way 2-1-1 after January 1, 2010.

Kansas City Beehive

The Kansas City Beehive offers free income tax information and filing to metro residents.

The Beehive will help you determine if you're eligible to get money back in taxes through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). See their FAQ on the EITC.

You can also file your federal and state income taxes online for free if you make under $57,000 per year.

AARP and VITA Tax-Aid

The AARP Tax-Aid program provides free tax preparation and assistance services to low-and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. VITA provides tax assistance to those families with incomes of $49,000 annually or less. AARP will have volunteers at the Kansas City Public Library Waldo and Southeast branches. VITA will have volunteers at the Kansas City Public Library Trails West branch. AARP and VITA Tax Assistance can also be found at various locations throughout the Kansas City area.
