Volunteering

The Kansas City Public Library’s mission of knowledge for all depends on the efforts of the entire community. We need the support of volunteers like you to help create an engaged community of readers.

As a volunteer, you can:

  • Make new friends and meet visiting authors as a greeter at our public programs
  • Make a difference in a child’s life by helping with homework after school or by becoming a Joy of Reading mentor
  • Keep books and other materials accessible to customers by helping staff shelve books and organize multi-media collections
  • Share your knowledge and teach others valuable computer and job skills
  • Assist with special projects including Summer Reading activities

Become a Volunteer!

Volunteers are needed for a variety of projects including these core positions at most Library sites:

  • Shelver to put books on the shelves and to pull books for delivery to other library locations
  • Computer helper for Library customers
  • Homework helper for students studying at the Library
  • Greeter at Central and Plaza locations

Joy of Reading Volunteer
The Library is looking for volunteers to mentor young readers in grades 1-4. As a Joy of Reading volunteer you'll meet each week with a student at either the Plaza Branch or Southeast Branch. Explore books together, play word games, and share the fun of reading!

To volunteer, complete an application form or request one from the Volunteer Coordinator (816-701-3707 or katietaylor@kclibrary.org).
