Education
It’s one of the most important decisions we make when it comes to our kids: where they will go to school. In some cities and towns, it’s all about the neighborhood. In smaller communities, there might be a single school for all the kids to attend. Here in Kansas City, there are dozens of options for families and caregivers, and let’s face it, they can be overwhelming. That’s why Show Me KC Schools, the Office of the Mayor Sly James, and the Kansas City Public Library are co-sponsoring the City School Fair.
As kids return to classrooms for the start of a new school year, we’ve got a backpack full of resources to make life easier for parents and caregivers. Whether it’s live homework help services, educational apps, or other learning tools, your Library offers many ways to help young learners succeed.
For parents trying to navigate Kansas City’s many public, charter, and private school options, the City School Fair is an invaluable resource. The annual event will be held virtually this year, and the Library is working to ensure everyone has access.
Kansas City Public Library cardholders living in the Library’s service area can now earn a high school diploma at no cost through Excel Adult High School, a self-paced, virtual education completion program.
With the beginning of a new year comes the renewed commitment to shake up our usual routines. We tell ourselves we’re going to learn a new skill, take a class or two, strive to get exposed to diverse and different ideas, make healthier choices, take risks in personal and professional lives… an ambitious list of life-changing activities. Luckily, the Library is an ideal starting point to help you turn your New Year’s resolutions into real results.

On a chilly November evening at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, the sounds of Pomp and Circumstance filled the Truman Forum. The auditorium was filled with smiling audience members holding phones and cameras high. At least three video cameras were positioned in different parts of the room to capture the event. In the corner, a reporter and photographer from 41 Action News were ready to shoot video and get interviews. All eyes were on the women wearing caps and gowns on the stage. They were the first class of graduates through the unique Career Online High School program.
