Few things say “summertime” like baseball … and libraries.
The Kansas City Public Library is teaming up with our sister institutions across the area and the hometown Royals for a night that celebrates both libraries and the Boys in Blue. Thursday, August 3, is Library Night at the K. Purchase discounted tickets at www.royals.com/kclibrary, and a portion of each sale will support children’s summer reading programs at KCPL.
Each year, about 3,500 kids take part in the youth summer reading program across all 10 Kansas City Public Library locations. Participants not only read but also join in activities that engage them with their communities, such as visiting the zoo, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, local parks, and other KC-area attractions. The program also encourages youngsters to give back to their community. The youth theme for 2017 is “Build a Better World.”
Children who don’t read over the summer can experience what’s known as the “summer slide,” forgetting a third of what they learned the previous school year. Not only do summer reading programs help avert that, they also show kids that reading and learning are fun.
So join the Kansas City Public Library and the Royals on a special night that supports that endeavor. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. See you there!
