I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)

Paul Muni was one of the great actors of Hollywood’s Golden Age, a chameleonic performer who created his own distinctive makeup and specialized in depicting real-life individuals on the screen.

Today, though, few moviegoers are familiar with the work of this Oscar-winning master. The Library’s December film series will correct that by featuring titles in which Muni plays a gangster, a convict, a famous scientist, and a great French writer.

One of the most devastating “social problem” films ever made, this Mervyn LeRoy-directed drama is based on the true story of a World War I veteran (Muni) who becomes involved in a robbery and is sentenced to 10 years on a brutal Southern chain gang.
