FilmCentral: 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg'
Welcome to FilmCentral! Our talented staff, Cullen and James, will announce a movie to discuss at the beginning of each month. You’ll have a few weeks to watch the movie, selected from titles streaming on either kanopy or hoopla. Then, on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m., we will meet on Zoom and discuss. You can pop your own popcorn, wear your fuzzy slippers (or your dinner jacket), and talk cinema. See you at the movies!
Jacques Demy's Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a looming presence in the history of film. As the recipient of numerous awards including the Palme d'Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival, and consistently ranked as one of the top 100 films of all time, the modern movie musical could not exist without its guiding hand. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is more than just a pleasant musical. It is a sumptuous experience that combines the bright colors of incredible photographic compositions with an ever engaged orchestra, wonderful singing performances, and a timeless romance that you will not want to miss.
We are happy to be able to introduce this mainstay of cinema history in the Durwood Film Vault as December's selection for our FilmCentral online film club.
