Buki Papillon's debut, An Ordinary Wonder, is the first novel to win the Maya Angelou Book Award.  An extraordinary literary debut about a Nigerian child's secret desire to live as a girl though raised as a boy, and the courage needed to be yourself.  Oto wants nothing more than to escape the expectations of their wealthy, powerful, yet cruel family. The love of Oto's twin sister sustains them, then wavers. Oto's drastic choices will alter the family's lives forever. A powerful coming-of-age story exploring complex desires, while interweaving Nigerian art,  proverbs, and folk tales to explore the challenges of family, identity, and gender. The author will join the conversation via video call. The Kansas City Public Library coordinates this book group in partnership with The Kansas City Star. Copies of the book will be provided for participants in advance of the discussion date.
