Although music recognizes no gender, for most of jazz history women have been diminished, and their presence on the bandstand has been unwelcomed. Paunchy and bald never mattered as long as a man could play, but women jazz musicians were expected to look like starlets. By the seventies, with the Kansas City Women’s Jazz Festival leading the way, women players created their own opportunities. They crashed the jazz boys’ club and once and for all dispelled the idea that women had to play like men. They changed the tune for future generations by fighting for equality not with protest signs, but with swing.

Please join local author, Carolyn Glenn Brewer for a celebration of her latest book, Changing the Tune: The Kansas City Women’s Jazz Festival, 1978-1985.
