Kansas City Public Library writer-in-residence and award-winning author Ann Hagedorn presents four talks in October and November intended to help aspiring writers research, write, and publish a book.
Your Passport to the Country of Writing programs take place in Helzberg Auditorium at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., on Wednesdays – October 15, October 22, November 5, and November 12.
Hagedorn is an award-winning author of four narrative nonfiction books – Wild Ride, Ransom, Beyond the River, and Savage Peace – and is currently writing a book for Simon & Schuster with the working title Murder, Mayhem and Business As Usual. A former Wall Street Journal staff writer, she is a graduate of Columbia University and has taught writing at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Xavier University, and Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism.
Hagedorn will also be available for one-on-one consultations with program participants at dates to be announced in October and November. Each lecture will cover a different aspect of authoring a book.
The October 15 session – Welcome to the Country of Writing – offers an introduction to the four-part series and guidance on how to discover your strengths and hidden talents as a writer as well as a look at what it means, on a daily basis, to be a writer and what it takes to do it.
The October 22 session – The Writer's Tool Box – focuses on the essential tools for becoming a writer, from psychology of routine and ritual to the practical elements of style, to tricks of the trade and humorous glimpses at the often idiosyncratic habits of writers. It includes our writer-in-residence's own tools from twenty years of experience.
The November 5 session – Your Map to the Country of Writing – shows attendees how to transform their research into an entertaining piece of writing through understanding the basics of story structure, an element of storytelling that is often neglected with disastrous consequences.
The November 12 session – Your Final Destination – features tips on pitching your book and finding a publisher, including the five criteria for a good book idea and a proven system for writing a book proposal.
