(Kansas City, MO) - The Kansas City City Council will recognize April Roy, manager of the Kansas City Public Library's L.H. Bluford Branch, at the weekly council meeting on Thursday, December 17, 2015.

Roy, who has managed the Library's location at 3050 Prospect Avenue since 2012, was recently named a 2015 winner of the I Love My Librarian Award.

The award is given by the American Library Association, celebrating the accomplishments of exceptional public, school, college, community college, and university librarians nationwide. Librarians are nominated by their patrons. This year, ALA received more than 1,300 nominations and selected just 10 winners.

Third District Councilman Quentin Lucas will introduce the resolution, which states that Roy "emphasizes the social issues that aim at building up both the individual and the community so that the next generation can be better contributing members of society."

The resolution specifically highlights:
• The establishment of a health and wellness center at the Bluford Branch, which includes free weekly fitness classes.
• The distribution of more than 800 children's books at community events and festivals.
• Roy's arranging of a surprise branch visit from George R.R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, adapted into HBO's Game of Thrones.

"The kinds of things April does are representative of what libraries are about today and will be in the future," says Library Director Crosby Kemper III. "We're a community institution. She's a key community player."
