(Kansas City, Missouri) - The Library's Off-the-Wall Film Series—a popular downtown draw—returns this summer with five engaging flicks and its inimitable rooftop viewing experience.
Beginning with the dark fantasy classic Time Bandits on Friday, May 15, selections in 2015 focus on strangers cast into strange, through-the-looking-glass lands. The theme: Down the Rabbit Hole. The five-month series, running through September, is co-presented by The Pitch.
Films are screened outside on the Rooftop Terrace of the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., on the third Friday of the month. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the movies start at 8:45. Admission is free.
A selection of locally brewed ales and lagers is provided by Kansas City Bier Company.
Attendees are welcome to bring blankets and folding chairs. In cases of inclement weather, screenings will be moved indoors to the Library's fifth-floor Helzberg Auditorium.
The 2015 lineup:
| • May 15 - Time Bandits (1981, PG, 110 minutes). A young boy joins a band of six renegade dwarves on a breakneck, time-travel trek through history, encountering an assortment of historical figures including a powerful Agamemnon (Sean Connery) and a stuffy Robin Hood (Python headliner John Cleese). Directed by Monty Python member Terry Gilliam.
• June 19 - Tron (1982, PG, 96 minutes. A video game programmer, played by Jeff Bridges, is transported through a pixel portal into the digital world he created. Renowned for its groundbreaking computer technology, the film spawned multiple video games, comic books, an animated television series, and a big-screen sequel. • July 17 - Labyrinth (1986, PG, 101 minutes). A girl braves a magical maze of muppets to rescue her baby brother from a glam-rock Goblin King. • August 21 - Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989, PG, 90 minutes). The fate of the world lies in the hands of a couple of truant air-guitar enthusiasts. Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) might save the future ... if they can pass high school history class. They have the ultimate study aid: a time-traveling phone booth. • September 18 - Desperately Seeking Susan (1985, PG-13, 104 minutes). Assuming the identity of "Susan" listed in a personals ad, a bored suburbanite navigates the wild Wonderland of 1980s-era New York City. |
