Author, photographer, and local historian Bruce Mathews discusses Charles A. Smith’s work in the first installment of the Library’s 2016 Kansas City Architecture Series. Charles A. Smith left an indelible imprint on our city, planning more than 50 schools as architect for the Kansas City School District from 1898-1936 and designing such landmark buildings as the Kansas City Club at 1228 Baltimore, the Firestone Building at 2001 Grand, and the Jenkins Music Building near 12th and Walnut. The latter is among a dozen of his works on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Smith was credited for several technical advancements in ventilation and cleanliness that were adopted in schools throughout the country.
