Welcome to The Big Read Celebration of
Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms October-November 2007
The Big Read is over, but Kansas City left its mark with record-setting
participation in a full slate of exciting programs designed to encourage the
city to read, enjoy, contemplate, and discuss Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell
to Arms.
Among the program highlights were the Keynote Address by Hemingway scholar
and The Kansas City Star Senior Writer and Editor Steve Paul, which can
be viewed online here, and The
Big Read Corporate Edition.
The Big Read Corporate Edition brought together more than 125 employees from
downtown Kansas City businesses engaging in on-site book discussions about
Hemingway's landmark novel of love and war on the Italian Front during the First
World War. The discussions were led by librarians from the Kansas City Public
Library. Participating businesses included Commerce Bank, Missouri Bank &
Trust, the Downtown Council, Hallmark and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas
City.
Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Kansas
City's The Big Read was developed by a consortium comprising Park University,
the Kansas City Public Library, and the National World War I Museum at Liberty
Memorial. The Big Read is designed to restore reading to the center of American
culture and encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read is an
initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the
Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
