David Thomson: A Personal Introduction to 1000 Films

Date and time of event: 10/14/2008 - 6:30pm
Location: Central Library

The Kansas City Public Library hosts noted film expert David Thomson for a discussion of his new book Have You Seen...? A Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films on Tuesday, October 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Described by the Atlantic Monthly as “the greatest living film critic and historian,” Thomson will discuss his latest work, a generous history of film and enticing critical appraisal written with equal parts humor, passion, and historical knowledge. Not content to choose only his personal favorite films, Thomson offers a list that will surprise and delight readers. Click here for The Guardian review of Have You Seen…? A Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films; the Pitch Weekly preview of Thomson’s Library appearance may be found here.

During this presentation, Thomson will devote particular attention to the works of inimitable British filmmaker Michael Powell, whose “Archers” productions with collaborator Emeric Pressburger educated audiences as much as the film community. Thomson and the late Powell both taught film courses at Dartmouth College, so Thomson will share his personal perspective as well as a critical appraisal. Powell’s work has influenced such contemporary American directors as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Wes Anderson.

Admission is free. Click here or call 816.701.3407 to RSVP. Free parking is available in the Library District Parking Garage at 10th and Baltimore.

Rainy Day Books will be on hand to sell copies of Have You Seen...? Thomson will sign copies purchased during the event.

This presentation is a part of True Brits: The British Film Series, which is screening Powell and Pressburger films every Monday at 6:30 p.m. through November in the Stanley H. Durwood Film Vault at the Central Library.
