A Triumph of the Spirit

Award-winning playwright Shirley Johnson illustrates the trials and tribulations that forged Harriet Tubman’s faith and solidified her life’s purpose with the semi-musical A Triumph of the Spirit on Friday, February 6, at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Blending humor and drama, the play features a mature, yet witty and vibrant Harriet Tubman, narrating from her childhood, adolescence, and young womanhood. Originally written as a one-woman show in 2003, the production currently has a cast of 15 that includes soloists Tammie May, gospel artist Cynthia Green, and Sadie Cole. Choreographer and Rockhurst student JQ Sirls offers a dramatic interpretive dance while “KC Songbird” Zenobia Smith makes appearances to round out the musical.

The presentation is a Plaza Branch Friday Night Family Fun event.

Admission is free.
