Library Cards & Accounts
The library card is your key to the collections and services of the public library. We offer two ways to get a library card:
Option 1: Apply Online for an eCard
Complete and submit an eCard Application Form to get immediate access to our digital resources including E-books, downloadable audiobooks, research databases, music and streaming video. Use of physical materials is limited but eCards can be migrated to Physical Cards at any time. Access to our digital resources is limited to residents of the Kansas City metro area.
Already have a Kansas City Public Library card? There's no need to apply for an eCard! If you have a traditional card and live in the Kansas City metro area, you already have access to our digital resources.
Option 2: Apply In Person for a Physical Library Card
Get full access to library materials, facilities and digital services. Picture I.D. and proof of your current address is required. Address can be verified with current ID, utility bill, property lease, postmarked letter addressed to you.
Access to our digital resources is limited to residents of the Kansas City metro area.
About Your Library Card
If you have a Library Card, you also have an online account. You can use this account to manage your holds, checkouts, and renewals; to set up a personal profile; to create lists; and to rate and comment on items in the Library's collection. Participation in the catalog's social and sharing features is not mandatory and you can keep your activity private.
If it's your first time logging into the catalog, login with your Library card number (no spaces) and your PIN. Once logged in, you'll be prompted to create a username. You can then login to your catalog account with either your username or your Library card number.
To logout of your account, click on your username in the upper-right corner and select Log Out.
PIN & Address Changes
To change your PIN login to your account, click on your username in the upper-right corner, and select My Settings. Then click on Change where it states "Change your account PIN".
Forgot your PIN
If you don't recall your PIN, use the Forgot PIN form.
Change your address
To change the address on your account, send us a message containing your new information or call us at 816.701.3449.

Who can have a Library card?
Residents of Missouri and Kansas are eligible for Physical Library Cards. eCards can only be issued to residents of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
eCards are immediately active upon verification of email address.
Physical Cards may be issued immediately if an applicant has proper identification and can verify current address. Without identification there may be restrictions on the account.
Youth 13 or Older
Youth 13 or older do not need permission from a parent or guardian to obtain either type of library card. eCards are immediately active upon verification of email address.
To receive a Physical Card they must present one piece of ID—a school ID, class schedule, lunch ticket, state ID, driver's license, or other reasonable documentation. A parent or guardian may provide verbal identification if present. Youth are responsible for materials checked out.
Children 12 or Younger
Children 12 and younger are not eligible for eCards but may be issued Physical Cards with a parent or guardian’s signature.
Children should be present at the time of application. The parent or guardian's signature acknowledges responsibility for the library card and material borrowed against the card. ID is not required.
What if I lose my card?
Please call 816.701.3400 to report the lost card and visit your nearest branch library with ID to replace it. There is a $1 charge to replace a lost library card.
What if my card has expired?
Every two years, your card will expire. This occurs so the Library can verify and update your address, phone number and email information. You can do this by visiting or phoning any of our locations.
