Story Writing: How to Build Background With Imagery and Setting

This class is all about writing sensory descriptions and creating a sense of place in writing fiction.

Discover how descriptive language can help ground your reader and create thought-provoking imagery that adds to the tone and intrigue of your story.

Look at several examples of descriptive language and clear scene-setting in pieces like “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “A Serious Talk” by Raymond Carver.

Work on creating impactful images and atmosphere in your own stories using these ideas and observations.

This class is taught by a graduate student in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s MFA Program in Creative Writing.
