This annual series returns in January and February with psychological studies of films directed by
Joel and Ethan Coen, whose visionary work swings seamlessly between dark drama and wry, sometimes screwball comedy. A
discussion follows each screening. This gangster film, set during Prohibition, stars Gabriel Byrne as a trusted lieutenant to Irish mob boss Albert Finney. Their control of an unnamed Eastern city is challenged by Italian mafia and their partnership strained by simultaneous affairs with the same woman (Marcia Gay Harden). Post-screening discussion led by
Marilyn Metzl , and
Trey Hock , assistant professor of filmmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute.
This title is Rated R and is recommended for adult audiences only.
