Barbara Bush: Pearls of Wisdom

Presented By
Jean Becker, Neil Bush, Lauren Bush Lauren, Ashley Walker Bush

Barbara Bush was one of America’s most popular first ladies, warm and unpretentious but also possessing a sharp wit and bluntness that led her family to nickname her “the enforcer.” Her advice ranged from such practical admonishments as “don’t complain and don’t explain” to the whimsical (and still practical): “If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle. ‘Take two aspirin’ and ‘Keep away from children.’ ”

Family members and other close associates share what they learned from the late first lady in the newly released Pearls of Wisdom: Little Pieces of Advice (That Go a Long Way). Bush’s ghostwriter and longtime aide, Jean Becker, discusses the book and its remarkable author – joined in the online presentation by Bush's' son, Neil Bush, and his daughters Lauren Bush Lauren and Ashley Walker Bush.

Becker served as Barbara’s deputy press secretary while George H.W. Bush was in the White House and then as the former president’s chief of staff for 25 years. She spoke at the Library in June 2019, discussing Bush’s eventful post-presidency.

All of Becker’s proceeds from Pearls of Wisdom go to support the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
