The documentary Real Boy tells the story of transgender teen Bennett Wallace, the struggle by his mother to accept his transition, and the support of Bennett’s friend and musical hero, trans folk singer Joe Stevens.
The film—attesting to the healing power of music, the gift of mentorship, and the ways in which we all are capable of change—is screened by the Library and KCPT-TV as part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up cinema initiative. Ivøry Black, Kansas City-based singer-songwriter with a non-binary gender identity, joins a subsequent discussion and performs.
Co-presented by KCPT-TV, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and The Bridge 90.9.
