LEGO for Life - Jonathan Bender

Local author and LEGO enthusiast Jonathan Bender headlines a public event marking the launch of the Library's new KC Kids Create discovery clubs. Bender, author of LEGO: A Love Story, takes part in a public conversation about his book, which spotlights the thriving community of adult LEGO builders. Bender is joined by children’s librarian and project coordinator Kristan Whipple, who talks about how the Library will use LEGOs as an educational tool for youth. Guests are invited to bring a new or used LEGO, DUPLO, or K’NEX set or a LEGO container for donation to the KC Kids Create program. Donations earn access to a post-event “Block Party” reception and building session for adults to enjoy food, drink, and LEGO “play stations.” Co-presented by the Library’s Youth and Family Engagement department and the Young Friends of the Library.
KC Kids Create will allow youth ages 8-12 to engage in creative play with a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Clubs launch in February at select Library locations. Funding provided by grants from the Shumaker Family Foundation and PNC Foundation.
