Movie: 'American Violet'

Series: Movie Matinee

This film is based on a true story. Dee Roberts is a young black woman raising four daughters with the help of her mother in an all-black housing project. In 2000, Dee is one of many residents swept up in an aggressive raid by the police drug task force of their small Texas town. Dee's so innocent that she believes, at first, that she's been arrested because of her parking tickets. Once in the grip of the legal system, Dee faces a difficult choice: free herself by accepting 10 years' probation on a plea bargain, or allow the case to go to court, which could have much costlier consequences. Backed by an ACLU lawyer and a local attorney known for his integrity and connections, Dee attempts to prove that the drug charges are not just false, but racially motivated.
