Neighborhoods & the Foreclosure Crisis: Finding the Way Out

Nick Haines, executive producer of news and public affairs programming at KCPT, moderates a panel discussion on neighborhoods and how they can weather the foreclosure crisis. Panelists include Jerry Mitchell (Ruskin Heights Homes Association), Elma Warrick (Homefree USA), Michael Duffy (Legal Aid), and Paul Wenske (Federal Reserve Bank). The event is produced by Consensus, the nonprofit that puts the public in public policy (www.consensuskc.org).

Almost everywhere you look, neighborhoods are dealing with the results of a crisis that has left some blocks with more empty houses than occupied homes. What can a neighborhood do to bounce back? What strategies have proven successful in Kansas City and elsewhere? What can the government, bankers and community organizations do to help turn the crisis into an opportunity, or at least to begin the slow process of rebuilding? Haines will invite panelists to weigh in, and will also encourage audience members to offer their questions and ideas for helping neighborhoods weather the foreclosure storm.

Admission is free and free parking is available in the multi-level lot next to the Plaza library. A 6 p.m. reception will precede the event.

Consensus has requested RSVPs for this event. Please confirm your attendance by writing to Jennifer Wilding, Director, at jenwilding@consensuskc.org.
